Lucas Receives First Major Labor Endorsement in Special Election for Brooklyn’s 60th

“Nikki Lucas is a powerful voice we need in Albany. She shares 1199SEIU’s values of “Quality Healthcare and Good Jobs for All” and our vision for a better New York. I know she’ll do everything she can to make sure healthcare workers aren’t left behind as we emerge from the pandemic,” said Dell Smitherman, 1199SEIU Downstate Political Director.

“I am honored to receive this endorsement from 1199SEIU. I will stand shoulder to shoulder with nurses and healthcare workers as we fight for better paying jobs, increase access to healthcare in our communities and ensure our frontline workers are safe on the job,” said Lucas.

1199SEIU is the largest union in New York and the largest healthcare worker union in the nation. We represent over 200,000 nurses and healthcare workers in New York City, more than 300,000 members in New York State, and over 400,000 total members along the East Coast.

Nikki Lucas is a 30-year resident of Starrett City and a staunch community advocate for residents of East New York, the surrounding neighborhoods of East New York, Starrett City, Brownsville, Canarsie, and many other neighborhoods across New York City.

A former Female Democratic State Committee Member in the 60th New York State Assembly District, and the founder of the People First Democratic Club, and the People First Education Fund, Nikki has advocated for the community in addressing issues such as the inhumane conditions prevalent across New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) buildings, access to healthcare, affordable housing and home ownership, senior housing that provides social services and increased funding for Community Based Organizations, and economic development initiatives that were designed to create business opportunities and create jobs for local residents.
