Mayor Mamdani Announces New Child Care Plan

(Press Release) New York City officials have announced a major expansion of the city’s 3-K early childhood education program, adding more than 1,000 new seats across 56 ZIP codes in all five boroughs as part of an effort to move closer to truly universal access for families with three-year-old children. According to the official announcement from Mayor Zohran Mamdani, the new seats will begin rolling out in September 2026 and will target neighborhoods where demand for early childhood education has been rising in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. City leaders say the expansion is intended to help working families access free 3-K programs closer to home while supporting early learning, child development, and school readiness through the NYC Public Schools system.
