New Lots Avenue Library Design

Community-Driven Design

The updated New Lots Avenue Library is a reflection of the collective vision of East New York residents. Through multiple public meetings and workshops, locals shared ideas that informed the design. "This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create a space that truly serves its community," said a BPL spokesperson. These efforts were facilitated by organizations like Arts East New York (AENY) and Hester Street, which ensured the project was shaped by those who live and work in the neighborhood. Assembly Member Nikki Lucas thanked the previous elected officials and community members who worked diligently to put the pieces in place for this renovation to be made possible. She thanked Charles and Inez Barron, Man Up Inc and Arts East New York, as well as the city agencies that played a role in making the concept of a new library, a reality.

State-of-the-Art Features

The design, crafted by MASS Design Group and Marble Fairbanks Architects, incorporates modern amenities to enhance learning and community engagement. Key features include:

• Technology-Enhanced Spaces: Dedicated areas for digital learning and creativity.
• Children and Teen Zones: Customized spaces for young readers and students to thrive.
• Community Meeting Rooms: Flexible areas for events and local gatherings.
• Heritage Center: A tribute to the area’s legacy, including its history as an African burial ground.

Honoring East New York’s Legacy

The renovation holds profound cultural and historical importance. Library officials recently uncovered that part of the branch is situated on a burial ground from the Revolutionary War era, containing the remains of both free and enslaved African individuals. The redesign aims to honor and integrate the African Burial Ground into the library’s identity, making it a centerpiece of the project. 

The Heritage Center within the library will highlight the historical significance of the site. As former Councilwoman Inez Barron noted, “This project ensures that our history is preserved and celebrated.” The adjacent Sankofa Park, a symbol of reclaiming and honoring African heritage, will complement the library's efforts to educate and inspire.

Looking to the Future

Construction is slated to begin in 2025, with the library expected to reopen in 2027. During this time, temporary services will ensure continuity for library patrons. The project represents a $26 million investment in education, culture, and community for East New York, funded by the City of New York and local advocates.

“We’ll have separate spaces for children, for adults, and teens will also have their own space,” said Fritzi Bodenheimer, spokesperson for the Brooklyn Public Library. “We’re going to have areas for music, for art exhibitions, and there’s going to be some beautiful outdoor plazas where people can enjoy reading and programs.”

The unveiling of this innovative design heralds a new chapter for the New Lots Avenue Library, transforming it into a hub for learning, culture, and connection in East New York.
