Brooklyn Museum Seeks Local Artists to Be Showcased in The Brooklyn Artists Exhibition

To mark its bicentennial, the Brooklyn Museum is set to unveil The Brooklyn Artists Exhibition, a substantial collective display celebrating Brooklyn’s diverse artistic talent. Scheduled to open on October 4, 2024, this expansive showcase will occupy over 15,000 square feet of the museum’s Great Hall, featuring a broad array of artworks across various mediums. This event is made possible by the efforts of an Artist Committee, which includes notable figures such as Jeffrey Gibson, Vik Muniz, Mickalene Thomas, and Fred Tomaselli.

The selection process for participating artists will unfold in two stages: firstly, through direct invitations by the Artist Committee, and secondly, via a publicly accessible open call. This open call will assess entries anonymously, with eligibility restricted to artists who have lived or maintained a studio in Brooklyn for the past five years (2019–24). Artists from all disciplines, including drawing, printmaking, painting, sculpture, textiles, mixed media, video, new media, and performance art, are encouraged to submit their work. To be considered, submitted pieces must be created within the last five years and not previously published or exhibited. Applicants must be at least eighteen years old.

This exhibition is a continuation of the Brooklyn Museum’s longstanding commitment to supporting local artists, a tradition spanning from juried shows in the 1930s and 1950s to the Working in Brooklyn series in the 1980s and 1990s, and more contemporary exhibitions like Open House and Crossing Brooklyn. The Brooklyn Artists Exhibition aims to showcase the vast and varied talent within Brooklyn, affirming the borough’s significant role in the contemporary art world.

Interested artists have until 11:59 pm ET on Sunday, April 7, 2024, to apply. Applications must be submitted through the Brooklyn Museum’s Submittable page by the deadline, as late or alternative submission methods (such as email, phone, or in-person deliveries) will not be accepted. There is no application fee.

For those seeking guidance on the application process, informational sessions will be hosted via Zoom on Monday, March 4, from 4–5 pm ET, and Wednesday, March 6, from 12–1 pm ET. Recordings of these sessions will be made available for those unable to attend live. The review of applications will occur from late April to June, with applicants being informed of their status in July 2024.
