Seeking a new home after content restrictions at historic theater After eight years of championing gender equity in theater, SheNYC Arts—the premier organization producing work by women, trans, and nonbinary writers—is unexpectedly being forced to find a new venue. The historic Connelly Theater, where SheNYC Arts has produced its shows, has imposed content restrictions that bar performances on reproductive rights, trans issues, and gender equity, sparking concerns about censorship in one of the world’s most culturally progressive cities.

The Archdiocese’s New Content Restrictions

The decision stems from a shift in leadership within the Archdiocese of New York, which owns the Connelly Theater building. The new leadership has introduced strict guidelines, denying the space to productions that would be deemed inappropriate by the Catholic Church. According to SheNYC Arts, these restrictions include prohibiting shows that address reproductive rights or gender diversity.

“The Archdiocese specifically called out our past productions, labeling them ‘inappropriate’ for discussing issues like reproductive rights and gender,” said Danielle DeMatteo, Founder & Artistic Director of SheNYC Arts. “It’s shocking that in New York City, especially so close to an election that could determine the future of our rights, we’re seeing this kind of censorship.”

Standing Firm on Gender Equity

Despite the setback, SheNYC Arts is resolute in its mission. “We are deeply saddened to leave the Connelly, our home for nearly a decade, but we will not compromise on our values,” DeMatteo continued. “Our commitment to telling stories that champion gender equity remains unwavering.”

As the organization looks ahead to its 10-year anniversary in 2025, SheNYC Arts is actively seeking a new venue for its two-week summer theater festival, which attracted 2,000 attendees this past year. The festival, part of SheNYC’s broader nationwide programming, has reached over 35,000 audience members since its inception.

Call for Support and New Venue

Now, SheNYC Arts is turning to its community for help. The organization is calling for both financial backing and assistance in securing a new venue to continue its vital work. “This is a challenging moment, but it’s also an opportunity for growth and renewal,” DeMatteo said. “We’re incredibly grateful for the support we’ve received and invite anyone who believes in inclusive theater to join us.”
