Attorney Janice Chen for Brooklyn
Brooklyn is a place where people from all walks of life come together, working hard to build stronger communities. Attorney Janice Chen is one of those people. As an experienced attorney and dedicated community leader, she has spent years helping Brooklyn residents navigate the legal system while also working to improve opportunities for young people. Now, she is stepping forward in hopes of serving the borough in an even greater capacity, as a Kings County Civil Court Judge.
Chen told BrooklynBuzz.com, “Becoming a Civil Court Judge is an opportunity to ensure that every person who enters the courtroom is treated with dignity, fairness, and respect. I have spent my career working to protect the rights of vulnerable individuals and helping families navigate complex legal issues. Serving as a judge will allow me to continue that mission on a larger scale—ensuring that justice is accessible to all Brooklyn residents.”
A Legal Career Dedicated to Public Service
For years, Janice has worked as a Court Attorney in Supreme Court, Kings County, handling cases that directly impact the lives of everyday Brooklynites. She has dealt with guardianships, Medicaid benefits, housing disputes, estate planning, and personal injury cases, always making sure that the legal system works fairly for everyone.
Her experience in New York's Article 81 Mental Hygiene Law regarding Guardianships, which helps protect incapacitated individuals, has been particularly important. During the foreclosure crisis from 2013 to 2016, she worked to ensure that disabled individuals facing eviction had plans in place to protect them, while also considering the struggles of homeowners and landlords. She has conferenced over 1,000 cases and managed more than 3,000 guardianship matters, giving her a deep understanding of the challenges people face when dealing with the courts.
Chen talked to us about her Guardianship work, stating, “In my years as a Court Attorney, I have seen firsthand how legal issues are deeply connected—housing, healthcare, family disputes, and financial security all intersect in ways that impact real lives. My work in guardianships, Medicaid planning, and civil practice has given me a broad understanding of these challenges, and I approach every case with a commitment to fairness and balanced decision-making.”
Janice has also spent years assisting judges in legal research and decision-making, ensuring that every case is handled fairly. Her ability to listen, analyze, and seek solutions makes her a strong voice for justice in Brooklyn.
Investing in Brooklyn’s Future
Janice’s dedication to Brooklyn goes far beyond the courtroom. She has spent over 14 years as a Board Member of Imagine Me Leadership Charter School, including 8 years as the Chairperson of the Board. The school was established in East New York and has since expanded to Brownsville. The school is committed to providing quality education and leadership training for Black and Brown youth, helping them build bright futures.
She believes that education is just as important as legal justice, and she has worked hard to make sure that students in these neighborhoods have the support they need to succeed. Under her leadership, Imagine Me has become a pillar of opportunity and progress for families in Brooklyn.
A Personal Commitment to Representation and Justice
Janice was raised in a Taiwanese-American household, where she learned the importance of hard work, fairness, and standing up for what is right. Growing up with two cultures gave her a deep sense of empathy, understanding, and the ability to see different sides of an issue, which now guides her work in the legal system.
She believes that the courts should reflect the people they serve, and that Asian representation on the bench is important—not just for diversity, but to ensure that every Brooklyn resident feels seen, heard, and treated fairly.
Dedication to Fairness for Brooklynites
Janice has dedicated her career to helping others navigate the legal system, protecting the rights of vulnerable individuals, and ensuring fairness in the courtroom. With years of hands-on experience and a strong commitment to Brooklyn’s communities, she is ready to take the next step in serving the borough.
Her goal is simple: to make sure that everyone who comes before the court is treated with respect and given a fair chance. She understands the struggles that families, homeowners, and everyday Brooklynites face, and she is committed to making sure the courts work for the people.
As she takes this next step, her dedication to Brooklyn remains strong, and her impact is only just beginning.
