Gotham Health Expands Child Development Care in Bronx

NYC Health + Hospitals/Gotham Health is expanding developmental-behavioral pediatric care at its Morrisania location in the Bronx, building on services at St. Nicholas in Harlem. The multidisciplinary program brings together pediatric specialists, speech and occupational therapists, psychologists, physiatrists and social workers to support children with autism, developmental delays, learning difficulties and behavioral challenges. Between April and October 2026, the two locations recorded 5,151 developmental pediatrics encounters, including 4,441 at Morrisania and 710 at St. Nicholas. Dr. John Gaipa provides specialized developmental care at Morrisania, while Dr. Tyrone Bentley leads developmental evaluation services at St. Nicholas. NYC Opens $200K LGBTQIA+ Community Grant Program

New York City is accepting applications for $200,000 in grants to support nonprofit and community-based organizations serving LGBTQIA+ residents across the five boroughs. The 2026–2027 NYC Unity Grant Program will award ten organizations $20,000 each for projects addressing education and employment, housing and economic stability, or health and well-being. Priority will be given to initiatives supporting transgender, gender nonconforming, nonbinary and intersex New Yorkers, LGBTQIA+ people of color, and other underserved communities. Eligible organizations must be NYC-based nonprofits or have fiscal sponsors and primarily serve LGBTQIA+ city residents. Applications are due November 16, 2026, with a virtual information session scheduled for November 2. Selected organizations are expected to be notified by December 11.

NYC Food Banks Awarded $2.27M in State Grants

New York City food banks and emergency food assistance organizations will receive approximately $2.27 million in state grants to expand food storage, improve facilities and strengthen distribution services for residents facing food insecurity. The funding is part of an $8.3 million statewide initiative announced by Governor Kathy Hochul through the NY PLATES program, supporting 59 organizations across New York. Among the NYC recipients are Brooklyn-based City Harvest, awarded $368,945 for transportation infrastructure, and food assistance programs in Sunset Park and Park Slope, each receiving $125,000 for facility improvements. The grants will support equipment, refrigeration, renovations and other infrastructure projects designed to help organizations distribute more food, reduce waste and serve families who depend on emergency food assistance.

NYC Health Initiative Supports 5,000 in Brownsville

Managing high blood pressure often requires more than an occasional doctor's appointment, particularly when residents face barriers to transportation, affordable services or ongoing care. In Brownsville, Brooklyn, a three-year public health initiative brought healthcare providers and neighborhood organizations together to make hypertension support more accessible. The NYC Health Department reports that the project strengthened care systems serving thousands of patients, including 5,481 Brownsville residents diagnosed with hypertension. Community health workers helped connect residents with blood pressure monitoring, health education and local services. Although federal grant funding ended in September, workshops at NYCHA developments and referral connections will continue, preserving parts of a neighborhood-based approach to chronic disease management.

NYC AI Jobs Institute Aims to Train 40,000 by 2032

As artificial intelligence changes the skills employers seek, New York is investing in ways for residents to enter technology careers without relying solely on traditional industry pathways. A new AI Jobs Institute in Long Island City will combine workforce training, employer connections and support for entrepreneurs, with a goal of reaching 40,000 New Yorkers by 2032. NYU Langone Opens Psychiatric Emergency Unit in Brooklyn

Brooklyn residents experiencing serious mental health crises will have another dedicated treatment setting as NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn expands its psychiatric emergency services in Sunset Park. The hospital's new Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program provides space for immediate evaluation, short-term observation and treatment, with access to inpatient care when necessary. The expansion also strengthens the connection between hospital services and community-based mental health support through a mobile crisis team and outpatient facilities. NYU Langone is simultaneously investing in the city's psychiatric workforce through a residency program focused on underserved communities, including immigrant families and patients who need care in languages other than English. Together, the initiatives reflect a broader effort to make psychiatric treatment more accessible across Brooklyn.

NYC Expands $4.8M Violence Prevention Programs

Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced an expansion of New York City's Crisis Management System to Bushwick, Harlem and Washington Heights/Inwood, strengthening community-based efforts to prevent gun violence. The initiative provides $1.6 million in city funding for each designated service area and supports trained outreach workers who mediate conflicts, prevent retaliation and connect residents with employment, education, mentorship and mental health resources. In Bushwick, funding will expand The Wick Against Violence, operated by Southside United. Brooklyn Opens Applications for 18 Community Boards

Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso has opened applications for New York City residents interested in serving on Brooklyn's 18 community boards. The volunteer boards provide input on neighborhood issues including land use, liquor licenses, transportation projects and local development. Each board can include up to 50 members who live, work or have a significant interest in the community they represent. Residents age 16 and older are encouraged to apply before the February 8, 2027 deadline at 11:59 p.m. Reynoso said he wants the boards to reflect Brooklyn's diverse neighborhoods and has directed Borough Hall resources toward supporting their operations and long-term sustainability. NYC Expands Free 2-K With 10,000 New Seats in 2027

Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul announced plans to add 10,000 free 2-K seats in fall 2027, expanding New York City's early childhood education program to 22 school districts across all five boroughs. The expansion will introduce programs in 17 additional districts, including neighborhoods in East New York, Brownsville, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Crown Heights, Bushwick and parts of Queens, while extending coverage to every Bronx school district and all of Staten Island. The initiative builds on approximately 2,000 seats launched in fall 2026 and is supported by a $1.2 billion state investment. Programs are expected to operate full-day and full-year, with family application details to be announced in the coming weeks.
