Freshkills Park Gets $687K for Environmental Research

Freshkills Park in Staten Island will receive nearly $687,000 in federal funding to expand its Science & Stewardship Program and establish resources for long-term environmental research. Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis announced the funding alongside Mark Murphy, president of the Freshkills Park Alliance and administrator of the park. The investment will support scientific equipment, environmental monitoring tools, data systems and greenhouse resources for studying the park's grasslands, wetlands, shorelines and wildlife. Researchers will collect baseline environmental data to help guide future restoration and habitat maintenance. The program will also provide students with internships and hands-on conservation training as Freshkills continues its transformation from a former landfill into a public park and research landscape.

Kota the Friend & TIDAL Partner for Flight Night NYC

Brooklyn-born independent hip-hop artist Kota the Friend is bringing Flight Night back to New York City for a two-day music and arts experience December 10–11, 2026, with TIDAL as presenting partner. Organized through Kota's FLTBYS brand, the event begins December 10 with Local Art Dealer IRL, an invitation-based gathering for independent musicians, artists, managers and creative entrepreneurs focused on ownership and direct-to-fan opportunities. On December 11, Kota will headline a concert at SOB's in Manhattan alongside Statik Selektah, Neptune XXI, Iman Nunez and Life of Thom. Flight Night has previously hosted events in cities across the United States and Europe. Concert tickets are available through FlightNight.com, while interested artists can apply to attend the gathering.

Hyatt Plans 1,800-Room StandardX Hotel in Times Square

Hyatt Hotels Corporation and Extell Development Company have announced plans for The StandardX Times Square, an approximately 1,800-room hotel at 255 West 45th Street in Manhattan's Theater District. Expected to open in the second half of 2028, the property will mark the first North American location for The StandardX brand. The development is planned to include an enclosed free-fall thrill ride, an observation deck more than 1,000 feet above Manhattan, a rooftop pool, restaurants, bars and nightlife venues. Developed by Extell, the project will combine hotel accommodations with entertainment attractions accessible to visitors and New Yorkers. The companies say additional details about the property's design, dining concepts and creative collaborations will be announced later.

NY Health Insurance Open Enrollment Starts Nov. 1

The New York State Department of Health has announced that open enrollment for 2027 Qualified Health Plans begins November 1, 2026, and continues through January 31, 2027. Residents seeking coverage beginning January 1 are encouraged to enroll by December 15. More than 800,000 New Yorkers are up for renewal statewide across NY State of Health programs. The Marketplace offers Qualified Health Plans, Medicaid, Child Health Plus and the Essential Plan, with free assistance available through more than 9,000 enrollment assistors. Officials are also encouraging residents affected by federal eligibility changes to review their coverage options. Oscar Health will no longer participate in the Marketplace for 2027, requiring approximately 4,800 affected consumers to select another plan.

Cleary Gottlieb Names NY Based Mark Pflug M&A Partner

Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton has announced that Mark Pflug has joined the international law firm as a New York-based partner in its Americas M&A and Private Equity Transactions groups. Pflug brings approximately two decades of experience advising private equity sponsors and public and private companies on acquisitions, investments, recapitalizations, joint ventures and other complex transactions. His practice spans healthcare, life sciences, real estate services, industrial businesses, technology, media and telecommunications, including cross-border deals in Europe and Asia. His appointment follows several other senior additions to Cleary's M&A practice during 2026, including Niqui Kohli, Emmanuel Enrici and Matthew Schwartz. The firm says the expansion strengthens its capabilities in private equity and corporate transactions.

NYU Study Finds New Drug Reduces Cancer Death Risk

An international phase 3 clinical trial led by researchers at NYU Langone Health's Perlmutter Cancer Center found that sacituzumab tirumotecan, a targeted cancer drug, improved outcomes for patients with previously treated advanced or recurrent endometrial cancer. Among 776 women, those assigned to the drug had a 41% lower relative risk of disease progression and a 32% lower relative risk of death compared with patients receiving standard chemotherapy. Tumor responses occurred in 35.1% of patients receiving sacituzumab tirumotecan, compared with 17.3% in the chemotherapy group. The findings, scheduled for presentation October 26 and publication in The Lancet, could inform future treatment guidelines, although regulatory status and longer-term outcomes require clarification.

NYC Launches SNAP and Medicaid Work Rules Website

New York City has launched an online resource to help residents understand federal SNAP and Medicaid work requirements, identify potential exemptions and maintain access to food and healthcare assistance. Available at NYC.gov/workrules, the webpage guides users through questions about age, employment, education and other circumstances to explain which requirements may apply. It also connects residents with benefits hotlines, food assistance, job opportunities, approved volunteer activities and NYC Care. Expanded SNAP work requirements took effect March 1, 2026, while additional Medicaid requirements are scheduled to begin January 1, 2027. City officials say their outreach efforts have helped more than 220,000 New Yorkers at risk of losing SNAP benefits.

NYU Langone Names Ishwaria Subbiah to Cancer Role

NYU Langone Health has appointed Dr. Ishwaria Subbiah as director of the Symptom Management Program for hematology and medical oncology at Perlmutter Cancer Center, effective November 1, 2026. She will also serve as an associate professor of medicine at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. A specialist in supportive and palliative care and integrative oncology, Dr. Subbiah will lead efforts to improve management of cancer treatment side effects, including pain, fatigue, nausea and neuropathy. She brings more than 16 years of patient care experience and previously held a faculty position at MD Anderson Cancer Center. Her work includes clinical trials, technology-enabled symptom monitoring and programs designed to improve patients' quality of life during treatment.

James Gray Film Series Comes to Queens Museum

Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, Queens, will present James Gray's New York, a seven-film series running November 7–22, 2026, celebrating the city's cinematic history through films selected by the Queens-born director. The program includes Gray's The Immigrant and a special November 12 preview of his new crime drama Paper Tiger, followed by an in-person appearance by the filmmaker. Other selections include Midnight Cowboy, Force of Evil, Raging Bull, The French Connection and Side Street. The series explores New York's neighborhoods, immigrant experiences, crime and cultural identity through films spanning several decades.
