NYC, Lake Placid Explore 2042 Winter Olympics

Governor Kathy Hochul announced the full membership of a nearly 90-member committee exploring whether New York State could host the 2042 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. The Lake Placid–New York City Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games Exploratory Committee held its first full meeting in New York City, bringing together representatives from government, business, sports and community organizations. Members will evaluate the opportunities, challenges and long-term considerations of a potential Games involving Lake Placid and New York City. Hochul also announced $2.5 million in state funding for the Monument to a Miracle project, which will honor the 1980 U.S. Olympic men's ice hockey team and five-time Olympic gold medalist Eric Heiden. No formal bid or host selection was announced.

CUNY Opens 14 NYC Campuses for 2026 Election Voting

The City University of New York will provide polling locations across 14 campuses for the November 3, 2026 general election, expanding access to voting across New York City. Ten CUNY locations will host early voting from October 24 through November 1, while seven locations will serve voters on Election Day. Participating campuses include Brooklyn College, Baruch College, Queens College, City College and Hostos Community College. Early voting hours vary by date, while Election Day polls are scheduled to operate from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. CUNY is also providing nonpartisan voter education through its CUNY Votes initiative. Residents should verify their assigned polling location through the NYC Board of Elections before traveling to a campus.

NYCHA Secures $529M to Renovate Harlem Apartments

The New York City Housing Authority has closed on $529 million in financing for a comprehensive renovation of Rangel Houses in Harlem, bringing planned improvements to nearly 1,000 apartments across eight residential buildings. The project will benefit more than 1,800 residents through upgrades to kitchens, bathrooms, heating and cooling systems, building infrastructure and shared spaces. The development has transitioned to Project-Based Section 8 through NYCHA's Permanent Affordability Commitment Together (PACT) program, which preserves affordable rents and resident protections. Development partners Genesis Companies and Community League of the Heights will oversee the rehabilitation, with construction expected to proceed in phases over approximately four years. The project also includes security upgrades, expanded resident services and flood protection improvements.

NYC Horse Carriage Phaseout Proposed for 2028

New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin announced that the Council will vote October 22 on Romanch's Law, legislation that would phase out horse-drawn carriage operations in Central Park by June 1, 2028. The proposal follows the June death of 18-year-old Romanch Mahajan, who was thrown from a runaway carriage in the park. If approved and enacted, the measure would stop the issuance of new carriage licenses and require the city to establish employment-transition programs for drivers and other affected workers. Those programs would include career counseling, job referrals, training opportunities and assistance with finding humane placements for horses. The legislation has 29 Council co-sponsors, according to the Speaker's announcement.

NYC Completes Avenue B Open Street Redesign

New York City has completed a permanent redesign of the Avenue B Open Street in Manhattan's East Village, adding pedestrian space, cycling improvements and safety upgrades between East Fourth and East 14th Streets. Announced by NYC Department of Transportation Commissioner Mike Flynn, the project includes redesigned intersections, pedestrian curb extensions, new loading zones and traffic changes intended to reduce vehicle volumes. The improvements are designed to make the corridor safer near Tompkins Square Park and neighborhood schools while maintaining access for emergency and city vehicles. NYC DOT also announced that applications are open for the 2027 Open Streets program, allowing community organizations, schools and business groups to propose similar projects across the five boroughs.

NYU Langone Opens Imaging Center on Upper West Side

NYU Langone Health has opened a 28,000-square-foot radiology center at 1980 Broadway on Manhattan's Upper West Side, expanding access to advanced diagnostic imaging services. The facility offers integrated PET/MR imaging for evaluating certain cancers and neurological conditions, advanced cardiac CT scans to assess the heart and blood vessels, and 3D mammography supported by artificial intelligence tools for breast cancer detection. Patients can also access additional imaging services interpreted by subspecialty-trained radiologists. The new location is connected to NYU Langone's electronic health records system, allowing patients to manage appointments and review health information through its mobile app and MyChart portal. The expansion brings multiple diagnostic services together in one neighborhood facility.

NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue Leads Ebola Training

NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue hosted approximately 50 health care workers from Elmhurst, Harlem and Jacobi hospitals for specialized training focused on responding to Ebola and other high-risk infectious diseases. The full-day session included hands-on exercises involving protective equipment, infection prevention procedures, hospital operations and safe medical waste handling. The training supports the three hospitals' development as Level 2 Special Pathogen Treatment Centers following federal program awards announced in January 2026. Bellevue serves as the regional Level 1 treatment center for New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The initiative aims to improve coordination among public hospitals and strengthen their ability to manage serious infectious disease threats.

Cooper Union, Tishman Speyer Finalize Chrysler Building Deal

Tishman Speyer has finalized a 150-year ground lease for the Chrysler Building and plans a $235 million investment to restore and modernize the iconic Manhattan office tower. The agreement with The Cooper Union covers the 77-story, 1.3 million-square-foot landmark at 405 Lexington Avenue and includes institutional investors led by PSP Investments. Planned improvements include restoration of the building's façade and distinctive crown, modernization of mechanical and elevator systems, new fitness and wellness facilities, and an indoor-outdoor amenity space on the 61st floor. Tishman Speyer also plans to prebuild much of the tower's available office space. Ground lease payments will provide financial support to Cooper Union as the college works toward restoring full-tuition scholarships for undergraduate students.
