New York Red Bulls Signs 19-Year-Old Sekou Koné

Red Bull New York has signed 19-year-old midfielder Sekou Koné to a Major League Soccer contract through the 2027-28 season, with club options for two additional seasons. The Mali-born player moves up from Red Bull New York II after making 18 appearances in MLS NEXT Pro during the 2026 season. Koné made his MLS debut against Los Angeles FC on September 9 and earned his first league start against St. Louis CITY SC on September 30. He initially joined the club's developmental team on loan from Yeelen Olympique in February. The signing gives Koné an opportunity to continue his development with the first team under head coach Michael Bradley.

Queens' Lost Battalion Hall Reopens After $25.9M

Lost Battalion Hall Recreation Center has reopened in Rego Park, Queens, following a $25.9 million reconstruction of the historic neighborhood facility. The improvements include renovated weightlifting, spin and fitness rooms, new exercise equipment, an updated basketball court and redesigned entrances and restrooms to improve accessibility. The project also upgraded fire protection, heating, cooling and other essential building systems. Built in 1939, Lost Battalion Hall originally served veterans before becoming an NYC Parks recreation center in 1960. The facility was once used by the New York Knicks for practices and helped develop local basketball talent, including former NBA player Kenny Smith. It also houses a historic Works Progress Administration mural commemorating its veterans' heritage.

NYC Says 2026 World Cup Generated $2B Economic Impact

The 2026 FIFA World Cup generated an estimated $2 billion in economic impact for New York City, according to a preliminary analysis released by the city. The estimate includes $1.2 billion in direct visitor spending and $162 million in operational spending, while tournament-related activity supported an estimated 12,100 jobs. New York City accounted for 56% of the estimated $3.5 billion economic impact across the New York-New Jersey region and 70% of regional visitor spending. The city also reported a 16% year-over-year increase in foot traffic at sports bars during the tournament, while international Visa card spending increased in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens.

Brooklyn Nets Name Alibaba Official Technology Partner

The Brooklyn Nets are partnering with Alibaba Group in a multi-year agreement that will bring new technology to Barclays Center while placing the company's brand on the team's jerseys. Alibaba will serve as an official technology and cloud partner of the Nets and become the team's official jersey patch partner during its 60th anniversary season. Beginning with the 2026–27 NBA season, Alibaba technology will power a Real-Time 360° Replay system designed to give fans more immersive views of game action. The partnership will also introduce an in-arena Nets Figure Lab where fans can create personalized collectible cards. The Nets and Alibaba plan to test additional technology and marketing applications throughout the season.

MLB, Mets Honor 25th Anniversary of September 11

Major League Baseball and the New York Mets are marking the 25th anniversary of September 11 with events connecting baseball, remembrance and community service across New York City and the league. At Citi Field, former Mets stars, baseball personnel, college athletes and volunteers will participate in an effort to prepare meals for families experiencing food insecurity throughout the tri-state area. The New York Yankees will bring Hispanic Heritage Media Day back to Yankee Stadium on September 9 as part of the organization’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. The invitation-only program will connect Spanish-language media with Yankees players and personalities through interviews, press sessions and a special roundtable featuring Hall of Famer Mariano Rivera and reliever Fernando Cruz. Pitcher Carlos Rodón and Manager Aaron Boone are also scheduled to participate, while Latin DJ and recording artist Alex Sensation will close out the festivities by throwing the ceremonial first pitch.
