Harrisburg also has an advantage that separates it from many smaller affordable cities: it is the capital of Pennsylvania. State government provides the city with a substantial institutional and employment base, while the Pennsylvania State Capitol anchors downtown just south of Midtown.

Higher education adds another layer to the city’s economy and population. Harrisburg University of Science and Technology has its main campus downtown, Temple University operates a Harrisburg campus, and HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, maintains a significant presence in Harrisburg, including facilities in Midtown.

Penn State Harrisburg is located nearby in Middletown, further expanding the higher-education presence of the greater Harrisburg region. Together, these institutions bring students, faculty, professionals, educational programs and activity into the regional economy.

The financial sector is another part of Harrisburg’s economic foundation, with major banks and financial-services companies operating throughout the region. JPMorgan Chase, PNC Bank, M&T Bank, Fulton Bank, Wells Fargo, Citizens Bank, First National Bank and Mid Penn Bank are among the institutions serving the Harrisburg market, alongside investment, insurance and professional-services firms.

The Pennsylvania Governor’s Residence is located along North Front Street overlooking the Susquehanna, and the riverfront continues south toward downtown and the State Capitol area. For residents of Midtown, the river isn’t simply something to see from a distance; it’s part of the neighborhood’s recreational environment.

For someone coming from New York, being able to leave home and walk or bike along the water toward downtown provides a familiar element of urban living on a smaller scale. The difference is that at the end of the day, home can mean three floors, three bedrooms and a private backyard.
