Bronx Born President Vanessa Gibson Announcing $6mil for opioid treatment center in Bronx
The Bronx is making a crucial move in addressing the ongoing opioid epidemic with the announcement of a $6 million allocation to build a full-service Recovery Center. This long-awaited initiative, announced by Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson alongside New York State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and Assembly Member Amanda Septimo, is a response to the borough’s devastating opioid crisis. The Recovery Center will be located at Lincoln Hospital, one of the primary healthcare institutions in the area, and promises to triple the number of patients receiving treatment for Opioid Use Disorder (OUD).
A Crisis Demanding Urgent Action
Opioid addiction has taken a brutal toll on New York City, particularly in the Bronx. According to the New York City Department of Health, over 3,000 New Yorkers died of a drug overdose in 2022, with the Bronx seeing the highest number of fatalities—831 overdose deaths, a stark contrast to Brooklyn's 692 and Manhattan’s 466. These statistics highlight the urgency of addressing opioid addiction in the borough, which is plagued by fentanyl-related overdoses.
The neighborhoods most affected—Mott Haven, Highbridge, and Hunts Point—are in desperate need of comprehensive care and support systems. President Gibson made it clear that the new Recovery Center is just the beginning of her efforts to tackle this crisis. “We are experiencing a crisis in the Bronx that requires urgent action and attention as the opioid epidemic continues to impact our communities,” she said. “This epidemic doesn’t just affect those struggling with addiction; it creates ripple effects that impact crime, homelessness, and the overall quality of life in our neighborhoods.”

A Lifesaving Hub for the South Bronx
The new Bronx Recovery Center, set to open at Lincoln Hospital, will be a hub for OUD treatment, offering holistic, patient-centered care. Health officials aim to triple the number of patients currently treated at existing facilities, like the NYC Health + Hospitals/Gotham Health Center, Belvis, which sees 300 patients monthly. The expanded facility at Lincoln will co-locate substance use treatment staff and services, improving care coordination and accessibility for patients struggling with addiction.
Mitchell Katz, President and CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals, praised the initiative: “The Lincoln Recovery Center will bring a wealth of resources to NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln and make it easier for our patients to access substance use care.”

A United Front Against Addiction
The success of this new Recovery Center is a testament to the unified efforts of local leaders and healthcare providers. Speaker Carl Heastie emphasized the importance of collaboration, stating, “The opioid epidemic is a complex health crisis that requires a comprehensive response to save lives and support those in recovery. Today’s announcement of $6 million illustrates our dedication to the betterment of the community at large.”
Assembly Member Amanda Septimo echoed these sentiments, underscoring the decades-long struggle against opioid addiction in the South Bronx. “The establishment of a full-service opioid center in the South Bronx is an important step toward addressing the public health crisis which has plagued our community for decades,” Septimo said. “By opening a center in the South Bronx, we are bringing necessary resources to vulnerable populations.”

Moving Forward with Compassion and Commitment
As the Bronx continues to grapple with the opioid epidemic, the creation of this Recovery Center marks a significant step forward in providing life-saving treatment to those in need. The $6 million investment in the Lincoln Recovery Center demonstrates a deep commitment to addressing not only the addiction crisis but the broader social issues that have stemmed from it, including homelessness and crime.
Bronx Borough President Gibson’s call to action was clear: “We cannot stand by as our loved ones suffer; we must confront this epidemic with urgency and compassion.” The Bronx Recovery Center will offer hope, healing, and a much-needed lifeline to those battling opioid addiction in the South Bronx.
