Michelle DeSouza explains the role of Civil Court judges, how their decisions affect Brooklyn residents, and why judicial elections are important to local communities.

Community Commentary: Why Civil Court Judges Matter to Brooklyn Communities

As Election Day approaches, many Brooklyn residents are paying attention to races for mayor, public advocate, borough president, City Council, and other elected offices. Yet one of the most important positions on the ballot often receives far less attention: Civil Court Judge.

As an attorney and community advocate, I believe voters deserve to understand what Civil Court judges do and why these positions matter to the everyday lives of Brooklyn families.

Many of the cases that come before Civil Court involve issues that directly affect people's homes, finances, businesses, and quality of life. Civil Court handles monetary disputes, consumer matters, contract disagreements, property damage claims, and other legal conflicts between individuals, businesses, and organizations. Judges may also serve in Housing Court, where decisions can impact tenants, homeowners, and landlords.

Unlike some courts that deal primarily with criminal matters, Civil Court often addresses disputes that affect a person's financial stability, housing situation, or ability to move forward after a disagreement or loss. The decisions made in these courtrooms can have significant consequences for the people involved.

Throughout my legal career, I have seen how important it is for people to feel that they have been heard and treated fairly by the judicial system. Many individuals who appear in Civil Court do not have attorneys and must navigate the legal process on their own. For them, the courtroom can be intimidating and unfamiliar.

That is why judges must possess more than legal knowledge. They must be patient, respectful, impartial, and committed to ensuring that every person who appears before the court has an opportunity to be heard.

A judge's responsibility is not to advocate for one side or another. A judge must carefully consider the facts, apply the law fairly, and make decisions based on the evidence presented. Public confidence in our courts depends on judges who approach each case with integrity, professionalism, and a commitment to justice.

The judicial branch is an essential part of our democracy, yet judicial elections often receive far less attention than other races. While judges do not write laws or set public policy, their decisions help ensure that laws are applied fairly and consistently.

Whether you are a homeowner, tenant, small business owner, employee, consumer, or parent, the court system touches many aspects of everyday life. The judges elected today will help shape how justice is administered in our communities for years to come.

As Brooklyn voters prepare to participate in this year's election, I encourage everyone to take a few moments to learn about the responsibilities of Civil Court judges and the important role our courts play in protecting fairness, due process, and equal justice under the law.

Early Voting is underway and continues through Sunday, June 21. Election Day is Tuesday, June 23. Eligible voters are encouraged to make a plan to vote and participate in this important election. Find the early voting schedule and your poll site location here.
