BROOKLYN, NY — Judicial candidate Michelle R. DeSouza is introducing herself to voters across Brooklyn’s 6th Municipal District as she seeks to serve as Civil Court Judge, bringing to the race a record of legal experience, public service, and deep roots in the borough she has long called home.
Brooklyn’s 6th Municipal District is a mixture of diverse neighborhoods, including Crown Heights, Prospect Heights, Park Slope, Flatbush, Prospect Lefferts Gardens, Ditmas Park, Kensington, and parts of Midwood. Throughout her legal career and community service, DeSouza has worked with colleagues and members of the community from every part of the district, experiences that have strengthened her appreciation for the borough’s diversity, resilience, and shared sense of community.
Raised in East Flatbush after immigrating to the United States from Guyana as a teenager, DeSouza says her life story has shaped her understanding of the people and families who come before the court. Her campaign is centered on the values of fairness, integrity, respect, and service, principles she says should guide every person entrusted with judicial responsibility.
“Brooklyn is home, and I understand how important it is for people to feel that they will be treated with dignity and fairness when they enter a courtroom,” said DeSouza. “Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to work alongside colleagues and serve people from communities across Brooklyn, and those experiences have only deepened my respect for the diversity and strength of this borough. My career has been guided by integrity, hard work, and a commitment to service, and I would be honored to serve the people of the 6th Municipal District.”
Background And Legal Experience
DeSouza’s legal background includes both public service and private practice. She is currently on leave from her position as an Assistant Corporation Counsel with the New York City Law Department, where she was based in Brooklyn and handled litigation matters on behalf of the City. Her legal experience also includes operating her own practice and advising individuals and families during important moments in their lives.
Community Involvement Across Brooklyn
Her professional path has been matched by a longstanding commitment to community involvement. DeSouza was a founding member of the Caribbean American Lawyers Association and has served in leadership roles within the organization. She previously served on Community Education Council 18 and has participated in faith-based service work, including shelter ministry and volunteering at a soup kitchen.
She also served as Board President of Battalion Christian Academy and continues to serve on its board. In 2018, she received the Caribbean Life Impact Award in recognition of her service to the community.
A Campaign Focused On Fairness And Service
A first-generation college and graduate degree holder from a large immigrant family, DeSouza says her candidacy reflects both personal perseverance and a desire to serve with humility and purpose. Her campaign is focused on introducing voters across the district to the person behind the candidacy, an attorney whose professional and life experiences have reinforced the importance of fairness, preparation, and respect for the law.
