NYCFC Returns Home to Face Chicago Fire in Eastern Conference Matchup

The Bronx, N.Y. — New York City FC returns to Yankee Stadium on Saturday night to host the Chicago Fire in an Eastern Conference matchup as the second half of the 2026 MLS regular season continues.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:40 p.m. ET at Yankee Stadium. The match will stream on Apple TV, while radio coverage will be available through the New York City FC app and TuneIn.

NYCFC enters the match with a 6-6-4 record and is fifth in the Eastern Conference. Chicago sits second in the conference with an 8-5-2 record. New York City FC is 5-4-2 against Eastern Conference opponents this season, while the Fire are 6-4-2 in conference play.

The match will be NYCFC's first home game since the FIFA World Cup 2026 break after opening the second half of the season with a road victory over the Columbus Crew. Head Coach Pascal Jansen said earning a win to begin the second half of the season was an important objective for the club.

“We just wanted to get a good start after the [FIFA World Cup 2026] break. Preseason so far has gone okay with all the things that we have had to deal with, but a massive compliment to the team for how they came out and presented themselves against a very strong side in Columbus, in a very tough away game. The message was very simple. We didn’t finish as strongly as we would have liked before the [FIFA World Cup 2026] break, but there is more to do going into the second part of the [MLS] season, and we wanted to get a good start, like we did [against Columbus Crew].”

Jansen also discussed the performances of midfielder James Sands and forward Bénie Traoré following the win over Columbus. He noted that Sands played in defense after originally being expected to feature in midfield, while Traoré made his first MLS appearance.

“They were part of the team [against Columbus Crew] and they did well in different roles. [Forward] Bénie [Traoré] was the profile that we had been looking for quite a bit... this was a perfect opportunity for him to play, introduce himself to MLS and feel what it is like to play in this League. He did well and did the things that we expected from him, which fit his profile and what the team needs him to do. The same goes for [Midfielder] Jimmy [Sands], only in a different role than we anticipated at first because we wanted him to play in midfield. Because of the things that we have had to deal with as a team, he dropped a line, and you could see that he brings his intelligence to the back four and the back three, both in-and-out of possession. He did very well in his first game in Columbus.”

Forward Malachi Jones also reflected on returning to the field after missing significant time because of injury, saying the experience has given him a greater appreciation for every opportunity to play.

“For me, the biggest thing is not to take anything for granted. Some of you may know, or may not know, that I was out for a number of months, almost a couple of years. In that moment, I learned to appreciate the time I have with this group and with the individuals here because I think we have a lot of special people on-and-off the field. For me, it’s learning to appreciate the moments I get on the field with them. That’s what I’ve been trying to do since being back. Making sure that I walk off after the game, whether it’s my best performance or not my best performance, thankful for the opportunity to be able to kick that football again and to have friends and family who get to watch and support as well.”

As NYCFC prepares to return to Yankee Stadium, Jones encouraged supporters to help create a strong home atmosphere for the club's first home match following the World Cup break.

“We are very, very excited to be able to play in front of you guys again. Whenever we play away, we’re always saying that we can’t wait to get back [home] in front of our fans. Especially coming off a result like the one we got in Columbus, we’re trying to replicate it. Post-World Cup, we need all the energy and all the vibes to make sure that we defend our home and make it a dangerous place to play. A lot of that is not possible without our supporters. They’re a huge part of the success that we have. When they rally behind us, we feel reenergized in certain moments of the game. So, come on New York. Show out tomorrow, and let’s get that place rocking so that we can put our best foot forward as well.”

Saturday's match gives NYCFC an opportunity to improve its standing in the Eastern Conference against a Chicago Fire team that enters the weekend in second place. It is also the club's first opportunity to play at Yankee Stadium since MLS resumed following the FIFA World Cup 2026 break.
