Brooklyn, NY — Plans have been filed with the New York City Department of Buildings for a new seven-story academic facility at 556 New Lots Avenue in East New York. The proposed development site sits between Hendrix Street and Van Siclen Avenue, just one block south of the Van Siclen Avenue subway station, which is served by the 2, 3, 4, and 5 lines.
According to permit filings, the property owner behind the application is Soly Bawabeh of Midyan Gate Realty No. 4 LLC. Earlier concepts for the site had called for a mixed-use structure that would include a charter school alongside commercial space.

The newly proposed building would rise approximately 105 feet and contain roughly 51,218 square feet dedicated to community facility use. Plans indicate the space would be designed primarily for educational purposes, including classrooms throughout the building. The first floor is expected to include a gymnasium and lecture hall, while the fifth floor would feature an auditorium and recreational area. The structure is planned as a steel-framed building and will also include a cellar level.
Project documents indicate the facility could accommodate approximately 500 students and span more than 60,000 square feet once completed.
The site sits about two blocks from the New Lots Public Library, near the intersection of Van Siclen Avenue and New Lots Avenue. The property currently houses a discount retail store.

If approved and constructed, the project would add another newly built educational facility to East New York, a neighborhood that has seen continued development in recent years. While new construction often sparks debate about neighborhood change, many residents also view new schools and educational facilities as long-term investments in community opportunity.
As the project advances through the city approval process and additional details emerge, more information will be shared with the East New York community.
Jonathan Imani of IMC Architecture is listed as the architect of record for the proposed development.
