Jaime Williams Rejects Political Distractions, Focuses on Affordability, in Southeast Brooklyn
Brooklyn, NY — Assemblymember Jaime Williams is calling out what she describes as growing political distractions and misinformation campaigns designed to take attention away from the real issues impacting working families throughout Southeast Brooklyn.
Williams said some opponents and political activists have become so desperate to reshape the narrative in the 59th Assembly District that they have resorted to spreading false claims, including inaccurately labeling her a Republican and falsely claiming she endorsed Curtis Sliwa.
“The fact that some people are trying to label me a Republican because I refuse to play political games shows just how disconnected they are from the real concerns of residents in this district,” said Assemblymember Jaime Williams. “I am a Democrat, I did not endorse Curtis Sliwa, and my record clearly shows that my focus has always been fighting for the people of Southeast Brooklyn.”
Williams represents a district made up of more than 60% homeowners, including the communities of Canarsie, Flatlands, Mill Basin, Bergen Beach, Georgetown, Marine Park, and Gerritsen Beach. She said the district’s residents are deeply concerned about affordability, rising taxes, tolls, housing costs, and maintaining the ability to remain in the communities they worked hard to build.
“My job is not to become a social media personality or political influencer,” Williams said. “My job is to legislate, fight for residents, and protect the people who live in this district from policies that could make life even more unaffordable.”
Williams pointed to her legislative efforts opposing congestion pricing and advocating against policies that would place additional financial burdens on residents who rely heavily on vehicles for work and daily life.
“I have consistently fought to keep costs lower for homeowners and renters alike,” Williams said. “That includes fighting against higher taxes, unfair tolls, rising fees, and policies that could increase rents throughout our communities.”
Williams also addressed the issue of housing and development, saying she supports responsible development that balances affordability, infrastructure, community input, and pathways to homeownership.
“I support development when it is done responsibly and with the community in mind,” Williams said. “We need affordable rents, but we also need to protect and expand homeownership opportunities, especially for Black and brown families. Homeownership remains one of the strongest ways families create generational wealth and stability for future generations.”
Williams said she believes some political groups have become more focused on ideological battles and online rhetoric than the day-to-day realities facing working-class residents in Southeast Brooklyn.
“Times are too serious for distractions and fast-talking political personalities,” Williams said. “Families in Canarsie, Flatlands, Mill Basin, Bergen Beach, and Gerritsen Beach want elected officials who are focused on affordability, public safety, quality of life, and protecting the future of these neighborhoods.”
Williams said her campaign will continue focusing on affordability, neighborhood stability, constituent services, and protecting both renters and homeowners from policies that could further increase the cost of living in New York City.
