Professor Gregorio Mayers Joins Law School Board of Visitors
CUNY School of Law is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Gregorio Mayers, Esq., to its Board of Visitors. With more than 20 years of experience as an attorney, strategic consultant, federal mediator, and tenured professor, Professor Mayers brings a wealth of expertise in criminal law, administrative law, and public policy to this role. His expertise and commitment to social justice have made him a sought-after speaker on critical civil rights issues, including bail reform, reflecting CUNY Law’s mission of law in service of human needs.
As a tenured professor of Law and Government at Medgar Evers College, Mayers has distinguished himself through his focused teaching in criminal law, administrative law, and state and local government. Mayers’ extensive public service experience includes two terms as a senior policy advisor in the mayor’s office, where he oversaw portfolios for the Department of Education, Department of Youth and Community Development, New York City Housing Authority, and Small Business Services. His recent appointments include nomination by Governor Kathy Hochul to the Brooklyn Bridge Park Board of Directors, as well as appointment as Commissioner for the Local Conditional Release Commission following nomination by the mayor and approval from the New York City Council — further demonstrating his commitment to criminal justice reform and public service.
“I’m grateful for the legal education and preparation I received at CUNY Law to be trained as a public interest lawyer,” said Mayers, “and I am delighted to be able to share my professional and lived experiences from the public and private sector to the Board of Visitors.”
His impact extends beyond the classroom and government service. Over the past decade, Mayers has played a pivotal role in representing numerous candidates for Civil and Supreme Court positions, as well as candidates for the House of Representatives, Assembly, and Senate. This experience in the intersection of law, politics, and public policy brings valuable perspective to the Board of Visitors.
“I am delighted that CUNY Law School alumnus, Gregorio Mayers, Esq. brings his extensive experience in government, higher education, and private practice to the Board of Visitors,” said Assembly Member Rebecca A. Seawright ’92, Chair of CUNY Law’s Board of Visitors. “As a professor, former department chair, voting rights advocate, and city government executive, he will provide unique input and perspective to our important work. His appointment is a marvelous stroke of good fortune for CUNY Law.”
A proud CUNY alumnus, Mayers’ commitment to community reflects the values that CUNY Law seeks to instill in its students. He resides in Brooklyn with his wife Onida Coward Mayers, a government relations executive, and their children Carlos and Lavoneia. Mayers’ journey exemplifies CUNY Law’s mission of expanding access to legal education and fostering leadership that reflects our diverse communities.
