Michelle DeSouza: Why I'm Running for Civil Court Judge and Why This Election Matters
BROOKLYN, NY — As voters prepare to cast their ballots in this year's primary election, Civil Court candidate Michelle DeSouza is encouraging residents to learn more about the role local judges play in their everyday lives and why she believes experience, fairness, and community understanding are essential qualities for anyone serving on the bench.
"Many people vote for judicial candidates without fully understanding what Civil Court judges do," said Michelle DeSouza. "The decisions made in Civil Court can have a direct impact on families, workers, small business owners, tenants, homeowners, and individuals seeking justice. These cases affect people's lives in very real ways."
The New York City Civil Court handles a wide range of matters, including landlord-tenant disputes, consumer issues, contract disagreements, small claims cases, and other civil matters that often touch the daily lives of residents. For many New Yorkers, Civil Court is the place where they come seeking fairness, accountability, and a chance to have their voices heard.
DeSouza, an experienced attorney and public servant, said her decision to run for judge is rooted in a lifelong commitment to service, justice, and community advocacy.
"I am running because I believe every person who enters a courtroom deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and impartiality," DeSouza said. "A judge should listen carefully, apply the law fairly, and ensure that everyone, regardless of their background, income, or circumstances, receives equal treatment under the law."
Born in Guyana and raised in Brooklyn after immigrating to the United States as a teenager, DeSouza understands the challenges many families face as they work to build opportunities for themselves and future generations. Throughout her legal career, she has represented the interests of New Yorkers, worked within government, and remained active in community service and civic engagement.
DeSouza, who has been approved by the New York City Bar, says she believes that judges must not only possess legal knowledge but also understand the diverse communities they serve.
"Our courts work best when people trust the process," DeSouza said. "That trust is built through fairness, integrity, preparation, and a genuine commitment to justice. If elected, I will bring those values with me every day."
As Election Day approaches, DeSouza encourages voters to research judicial candidates and participate in the democratic process.
"Judges make decisions that can affect people's homes, finances, businesses, and families," she said. "These positions matter, and every vote matters."
