(Announcement) Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez Announces She Will Not Seek Re-Election
Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez announced on social media that she will not run for another term in the U.S. House of Representatives, where she has served for more than three decades.
Her statement read:
“Serving the people of New York City for over three decades has been the honor of my life. Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey, nothing I have accomplished would have been possible without your support.”
Velázquez, the first Puerto Rican woman elected to Congress, currently represents New York’s 7th Congressional District, which includes parts of Brooklyn and Queens such as Clinton Hill, Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Bushwick, Fort Greene, Long Island City and Hunters Point.
Her decision not to seek re-election leaves the seat open for the 2026 cycle and is expected to set off a highly competitive race in a district that has long been a center of political influence in New York City.
