(NYC VOTER RESOURCE) National Voter Registration Day and Week of Action 2025 - Voter information you need to know.

Voter Resource information provided by Duane Frankson, Civil Court Judicial candidate in Brooklyn's 7th Municipal District, covering East New York, Brownsville, Bushwick, Cypress Hills

Are you able to vote? Are you ready to vote?

September 16, 2025 is National Voter Registration Day (NVRD), a nonpartisan civic holiday celebrating democracy. Established in 2012, NVRD is a time of community action including voter registration and education about the role each American plays in growing our shared democracy.

NVRD is part of National Voter Registration Week of Action; September 15 -21. The Week of Action is the marquee event of a Michelle Obama borne initiative called “When We All Vote”. Established in 2018, When We All Vote is committed to changing the culture around voting and increasing participation in every election.

National Voter Registration Day and National Voter Registration Week of Action are scheduled to ensure that every eligible American can register to vote well ahead of their own state deadlines. If you are registering to vote in New York, Election Law requires you reside in the state and county, city or village where you want to vote for at least 30 days before election day.

Some of the important deadlines include:

 October 20, 2025 is the deadline for changing your address with the Board of
Elections,
 October 25, 2025 is the deadline for Voter Registration,
 October 25, 2025 – November 2, 2025 is early voting, and
 November 4, 2025 is Election Day.

In 2021, New York restored the right to vote for a person convicted of a felony upon release from incarceration, regardless of parole or other term of post-release
supervision. The rule in New York is simple, if you are not in jail and meet the other requirements of Election Law, you can vote. Restore Your Vote, a project of the Campaign Legal Center, estimates there are 19 million Americans with past convictions that can vote, but just don’t know they can.

Further, victims of domestic violence can protect their information from public access by requesting a confidential registration and ballot process from their county board of elections.

New York has made tremendous strides to make voting accessible to everyone, but there is still work to do. People navigating homelessness or temporary housing are a significant population that are consistently under-represented in the political process. If you are experiencing housing instability go to your local election office and visit

Vote.gov for information. Being unhoused does not prevent you from voting but it is a challenge. I encourage everyone to use this week to prepare for the upcoming election by registering to vote, checking your voter registration status and encouraging friends and neighbors to do the same.
