Hyundai Motor Announces Opening of Hyundai Translocal Series: Ho Tzu Nyen in New York and Ulsan - 1
Hyundai Motor Company is launching a new contemporary art exhibition at New York City’s New Museum featuring newly commissioned work from Singapore-based artist Ho Tzu Nyen. Opening September 24 on the Bowery, the exhibition includes P for Power: Up Down, an installation that uses artificial intelligence to generate changing image sequences on screens inside the museum’s glass-front elevators. The exhibition launches a three-year collaboration between the New Museum and South Korea’s Ulsan Art Museum through the Hyundai Translocal Series. The two institutions will develop three annual exhibitions through 2028, combining site-specific commissions with explorations of art, technology and cultural identity. Ho’s New York exhibition runs through January 24, 2027.

SEOUL/NEW YORK, September 22, 2026 – Hyundai Motor Company today announced the opening of Hyundai Translocal Series: Ho Tzu Nyen, co-organized by the New Museum in New York, United States, and the Ulsan Art Museum in Ulsan, Korea.
The exhibition opens at the New Museum on September 24, 2026, and runs through January 24, 2027, followed by a presentation at the Ulsan Art Museum from October 22, 2026, through February 21, 2027.
Hyundai Translocal Series: Ho Tzu Nyen is the first exhibition in a three-year collaboration between the two institutions as part of the Hyundai Translocal Series. This initiative by Hyundai Motor supports multi-year collaborations that encompass joint research, artwork commissions, exhibitions, public programming, and publications.
Which Newly Commissioned Works Does Ho Tzu Nyen Present in the Exhibition?
Hyundai Translocal Series: Ho Tzu Nyen presents newly commissioned, site-specific works by Singapore-based artist Ho Tzu Nyen, whose work across film, video, performance, and multimedia installation investigates the plurality of cultural identities across Southeast Asia. Drawing on numerous Eastern and Western cultural references, Ho’s works blend mythical narratives and historical facts to mobilize different understandings of history, its writing, and its transmission.
Commissioned for the New Museum, P for Power: Up Down (2026) is installed on screens in the museum’s OMA-designed, glass-front elevators looking onto the Bowery. When an elevator button is activated, a life-size child protagonist appears on screen and delivers a short text in the form of a mantra, question, riddle, or note reflecting on the nature of power.
Each time a visitor presses a floor button, an AI system generates a new image sequence in real time. Here, AI functions not simply as a tool for producing images, but as a generative structure through which narratives and identities remain open to change.
Presented in parallel with Ho’s commission for the Ulsan Art Museum, the exhibition connects New York and Ulsan through a shared conceptual framework while responding to the distinct architectural and cultural contexts of each site.
Following the New York presentation, P for Power: Double Life of P (2026) will open at the Ulsan Art Museum on October 22. Configured as an immersive installation using 24 projectors and a multichannel sound system, P for Power: Double Life of P (2026) incorporates data drawn from Ulsan’s industries, technologies, materials, and soundscapes. Together, the mutable nature of the two works connects to Ho’s longstanding engagement with histories and identities that resist singular or fixed definition. Across New York and Ulsan, the exhibition explores the multiple meanings of power, from political and technological systems to more fluid notions of endurance, transformation, and agency.

How Does the Collaboration Connect New York and Ulsan?
Beginning with Hyundai Translocal Series: Ho Tzu Nyen, the New Museum and the Ulsan Art Museum will collaborate on a three-year exhibition program through 2028, with two additional commissions to follow.
Through this collaboration, New York and Ulsan become interconnected sites of translation and transformation, where artistic ideas take on new meanings across translocal contexts.
By presenting site-specific works on the New Museum's elevator screens and at the Ulsan Art Museum's XR Lab — an experimental space dedicated to media art — the collaboration creates an ongoing dialogue between the two cities while exploring how contemporary issues intersect with broader global currents.
