Official Statement: Assemblywoman Nikki Lucas on Her Candidacy for Kings County Democratic Party Chair

BROOKLYN, NY — September 29, 2026 (NYC NEWSWIRE) Following the announcement that Assemblywoman Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn will step down as Chair of the Kings County Democratic Party, I am officially announcing my candidacy to serve as the next Chair of our Party.

I am humbled and honored by the encouragement I have received from Democratic District Leaders, County Committee Members, elected officials, community leaders and Brooklyn residents. I do not take that support for granted, and I understand that leadership must be earned through trust, a record of service and the confidence of those entrusted with making this decision.

I am entering this race because I believe I can bring people together and help our Party deliver for Brooklyn. I ask my fellow Party members to consider my candidacy based on my own record, my own work and my own vision for the future of our Party. I have always approached public service with independence and inclusiveness—and that is how I will approach this responsibility.

Brooklyn is made up of many different communities, but we are confronting many of the same challenges. Whether in East New York, Red Hook, Williamsburg or elsewhere in our borough, families are dealing with affordability and housing concerns, seniors want to remain in the communities they helped build, and our young people need greater access to education and career opportunities.

Meeting those challenges requires Democrats to work together across neighborhoods and different perspectives. Unity does not mean that we will always agree; it means respecting one another, listening to different perspectives and recognizing that our shared responsibility to the people of Brooklyn is greater than our differences.

If I am fortunate enough to earn the confidence of my fellow Democratic leaders, inclusion and transparency will be central to how I lead. I am committed to reforming our Party’s systems so that all voices are heard and to supporting District Leaders and County Committee Members throughout Brooklyn. Regardless of whom someone supported in the past or where they may stand on a particular issue, their voices and their communities matter.

It is essential at this critical moment for New Yorkers that Brooklyn Democrats unite and lead. This candidacy is about bringing us together around what comes next. I am prepared to be judged on my record, my leadership and the vision I am putting forward, and I look forward to earning the confidence of my fellow Democrats.
