Amtrak Breaks Ground on $1B NYC Rail Facility

Amtrak has begun a major modernization of Sunnyside Yard in Long Island City, marking a significant investment in New York City’s passenger rail infrastructure. The more than $1 billion initiative will create new maintenance, inspection, cleaning and service capacity designed to support the next generation of Amtrak trains while improving the efficiency of one of the region’s most important rail facilities. As portions of the project come online through 2030, the upgraded Queens yard is expected to play a central role in maintaining trains serving New York and destinations throughout the Northeast, while helping reduce the amount of time equipment is taken out of service.
