CUNY Doubles Application Fee Waiver Period for NYC Public High School Seniors
New York City public high school seniors can apply to CUNY without paying the university’s $65 freshman application fee during an expanded two-month waiver period running from September 15 through November 16. The initiative is designed to reduce an upfront barrier for students considering college and will be promoted directly to seniors and their families, as well as through advertising across the NYC subway system. The program has particular significance for the city’s public schools because more than 80% of CUNY freshmen come from the New York City Public Schools system. CUNY introduced the broader fee-waiver initiative in 2023 and has extended this year’s application window by a month, giving graduating seniors additional time to submit applications without the usual fee.

The City University of New York (CUNY) will waive its $65 freshman application fee for New York City public high school seniors Sept. 15 through Nov. 16, a month longer than last year. The fee waiver will be heavily promoted to prospective students over the next two months in direct communications to seniors and their caregivers and with digital ads in the NYC subway system that began yesterday, September 14.
“More than 80% of CUNY freshmen come from the New York City Public Schools system, and we want to make it as easy as possible for city high school seniors to apply to our colleges,” said CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez. “CUNY is committed to making sure every student who is interested in pursuing a college degree has the opportunity to take that important next step.”
“By waiving the CUNY application fee for our high school students, we are providing access to incredible opportunities that can shape their futures,” said New York City Public Schools Chancellor Kamar H. Samuels. “As a CUNY graduate myself, I believe deeply in the importance of a pipeline like CUNY to prepare our students for rewarding careers. Cost should never a be barrier to higher education, and this waiver program is one way we are acting on that belief.”
The fee waiver launched in 2023 as part of an effort to make it easier for city high school seniors to find a home at CUNY. CUNY already waived the application fee for thousands of eligible city public school students each year, including those who are homeless or in foster care, living in subsidized public housing or receiving public assistance.
