Governor Kathy Hochul's recent announcement marks a significant milestone: nearly one million New Yorkers are now benefiting from the state-administered Medicare Savings Program (MSP). This groundbreaking initiative, aimed at alleviating healthcare costs for older adults, could save eligible New Yorkers an estimated $7,400 annually. As Medicare open enrollment kicks off tomorrow, Hochul urges more residents to explore their eligibility for these life-changing savings.
A Lifeline for Older New Yorkers
Governor Hochul’s expansion of the MSP in 2022 has significantly widened income eligibility, ensuring more New Yorkers can take advantage of the program. "Our work to expand the Medicare Savings Program is easing healthcare costs for nearly a million people and putting thousands back into their pockets," said Hochul. The Governor encouraged residents to use the upcoming Medicare open enrollment period, starting October 15 and running until December 7, to explore their options.
The MSP not only covers Medicare Part B premiums but also provides access to the federal government’s Extra Help program, which supports prescription drug costs. With income limits set at $2,355 per month for individuals and $3,189 for couples, many older New Yorkers are now eligible for assistance.

Healthcare Equity in Action
New York's push toward healthcare equity is demonstrated in the MSP’s rising enrollment numbers. Greg Olsen, Director of the New York State Office for the Aging, praised the Governor’s efforts, noting the program’s impact on reducing out-of-pocket expenses for nearly one million individuals.
“This is a direct result of our local outreach efforts and the Governor’s commitment to ensuring no one is left behind,” said Olsen.
